John Edwards Disappoints as He Admits Extramarital Affair
Keep focusing on poverty, John
ABC News reports that former presidential candidate John Edwards has admitted having an affair.
Already under the spotlight for alledgedly having a love child with his mistress (which he denies based on the timing of the child’s birth), an affair by our squeaky-clean Edwards is a bombshell - mostly because Republicans have been breathing most of the hypocritical/immoral air in the last few years.
In all likelihood the affable Edwards will not speak at the Democratic convention. If Obama wins, doubt is now cast on the possibility of Edwards in a cabinet position, or, as previously suggested, Attorney General.
His wife’s public battle with cancer only exacerbates this admission, as the Edwards campaign struck an emotionally and personal chord for many families who have been touched by cancer.
Most sad is the future of Edwards’s noble war on poverty in America. As I previously wrote last May:
By using his affluent position to run a presidential campaign spearheading the issue of poverty, former Sen. John Edwards has donned his green tights, hoping to use the compassion and wealth of our country to help those most in need.
Let’s hope the former senator can find some redemption in continuing his cause, and that the Democratic party can put poverty before politics by continuing to embrace Edwards in his effort.
