In her "No Bias, No Bull" segment Wednesday night, Campbell Brown pleaded with the McCain campaign to stop what she referred to as "race baiting."

"It is getting very, very ugly," Brown said. "Tonight, we are cutting through the bull on the issue of race and this campaign."

Brown blasted McCain surrogates for injecting race Obama's race into the campaign narrative by invoking his middle name or referring to him as a terrorist, and she called on McCain to deliver a "much stronger denunciation than a campaign-generated paper statement":

Look, everybody, we all know that we are in unchartered territory here. Never before has there been an African-American presidential nominee. So without question, race is going to be part of the conversation. Race baiting doesn't have to be. And yet, it is happening in this campaign.

Twice this week, surrogates for Senator McCain had made a point of calling Senator Obama "Barack Hussein Obama." The implication here is clear. It's foreign sounding. It's Muslim sounding. It's un-American sounding. It's dangerous sounding.

What it is, is race baiting. And that is what is dangerous. Inciting crowds, encouraging their angry outbursts. McCain supporters shouting "treason" and "terrorist" about Obama at these rallies — that is dangerous.

Earlier in the campaign, McCain denounced this stuff. He strongly denounced it. And today, it requires a stronger response, a much stronger denunciation than a campaign-generated paper statement.

Brown also cautioned Obama supporters not to accuse McCain of racism over his "that one" remark from Tuesday's Presidential debate, as she reported some have done. "Give me a break," she said. "I can hear my grandfather talking about one of his kids or grandkids as 'that one.' He used it a lot. Maybe it's a generational thing. Maybe it wasn't a term of endearment
the way it was when my grandfather used it. Maybe McCain did mean to be disrespectful, but racist? I don't think so."

She ended the segment with a plea for candidates, supporters, and the media:

You know, we should be holding these candidates accountable for what they say during the campaign, and hope that in these final days, they do try to maintain a little dignity. But we have also got to check ourselves. We have a responsibility, too, to not get overheated. What we say matters, too.

Whoever wins this election, we are all going to have to rally around that person. Given what is happening to our economy, all that is going on in this country right now, none of us wants the next president to be a failure, whoever he may be, do we?

Over the weekend, Brown's shift towards the role of nonpartisan commentator was highlighted in a New York Times article. A collection of recent links in which she has kept politicians' feet to the fire appears below:

Trouble is, when CNN constantly reruns Palin's incendiary race-baiting comments, it is complicit in the smearing and race-baiting. And it's all about ratings. CNN is furthering sleaze and race-baiting merely for ratings and profit. This is a historical race and CNN's shameful journalism will be long remembered and talked about when the election is all over.

The same thing happened when Kerry was swiftboated. CNN and the other cable networks, by repeating the unfounded charges, became part of the swiftboating.

There is no race baiting in JOhn McCain's campaign. The left only wishes so they could use it more blantantly. If anyone is race bating it is the democratic party.

Hello to all commentators,

All the commercials, pundits, gaffes, personal attacks, and the MSM will not dictate the outcome of this election. THE GROUND GAME IS WHERE ELECTIONS ARE WON, AND LOST!

Before you go to the next left leaning article to comment on, or right leaning article to start an argument with a repug (which will no doubt end with them calling you an unpatriotic socialist wimp) I suggest that you get in the game.

Dear Miss Brown,

You have no clue!

I have not seen anything from the McCain campaign that even remotely looks like race baiting.

The Obama camp and his worshippers are the only ones that ever bring up race. This deeply concerns me. As a Conservative, and part time Republican, I can tell you that my experience has always been that Conservatives deeply believe in the words of MLK. We especially love the one about judging a person by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. If the Obama people would stop bringing up race, it would NOT be an issue in this race!!!

You're kidding, right? Just because they don't specifically bring up race (McCain, Palin, et al) doesn't mean they aren't. All the references to Obama as being "different", which is not how they've (Republican Party) have referred to past candidates. And as for MLK Jr.'s words, this is cherry picking. MLK meant to judge people by their character once everyone was being treated the same, yet he was appalled then and would be now at the unequal treatment in employment, law enforcement, and as we find out more everyday in finance.

When you grow up being slighted by people for your skin color, you learn real quick the difference between oversights and slights. Had he said "That guy", no one would have had a thing to say about it. But saying "That one" reflects not dignifying a man enough to say his name.

Puh lease! What then is insinuated by the deliberate and prolonged pronounciation of Obama's middle name. I have never heard these same people use McCain's middle name when introducing him.

Why is Obama's middle name associated with a terrorist? Does no one in the media or anyone else remember the late King Hussein of Jordan, a staunch ally of the U.S. prior to his death in 1999? King Hussein was a man of honor and integrity, a peacemaker, a man who worked to elevate and improve the lives of the people of his country and the Middle East. His son, King Abdullah has the same commitment to follow in his fathers' footsteps to make Jordan as is said "an oasis of peace" in the Middle East. Why don't these pundits and reporters, (sadly so few true journalists left) invoke the name of King Hussein of Jordan the next time these mudslingers use Obama's middle name as a scare tactic. I won't be holding my breath.

Is Brown CNN's answer to Keith and Rachel? It used to be that these networks would try to out right-wing each other. Now it looks to be swinging the other way.

I listened to the debate on NPR, without the verbal cues. I had know idea what McCain was talking about when he said "that one." It wasn't until later, when I saw the video that he was referring to Obama. A very strange phrase, I must say.

Good going Campbell.

McCain may denounce racist coments, but his camp is making a lot of them of late.

Sen. McCain should be voted out the Senate as well as the Presidential election. I am officially call for the resignation of Senator McCain and the impeachment of Gov. Sarah Palin. The absurd allegations and riotous inciting occurring on the campaign trail is not an Article I protected speech privilege; it is unlawful! As a nation we need not subject our country to this type of fake campaigning, inciting words and attitudes, mob gathering, and outright deceptions and lies. I would encourage the media to blackout these "McCain Mob Rallies". Deny McCain what he wants most " news cycles. If these activities were being offered by a standard citizen the actions would not be news worthy. Dear Media, I offer that even from Senator McCain this is not news worthy.

On another note, for a veteran like Chris Matthews to display such a view he may as well be on the McCain payroll. It is impossible for our veteran new hosts to overcome their own personal biases and prejudices - even racial ones. On the ground in America racism is in great decline. It's remains prominent the media and elite circles they stokes the flames and often supports supremacy doctrines. I welcome the day when these type of journalists have moved off the scene - two more generations. See for yourself.

Thank you Campbell for your insight on race baiting. I appreciate your call to lay down our arms and be civil. Your attempt at explaining, "That One " was well noted. In an attempt to explain to you the racial callousness of decades of racial injustice, Words do Matter. It was those words cruelly spoken that broke the will of many people of color along with the masters whip and cruelty. So when you tell us to chill out, we hear you and better judgement insues but the sting of a white person direspectfully speaking it brings back memories. So thank you for the Olive branch and never forget the heaviness of the pain of Our Past. When Speaking Please Be Mindful.

McCain and Palin, since being interviewed by Sean Hannity and hearing him implore them to attack Obama, have done just that, including almowt word for word adoption of Hannity's talking points. Even scores of his campaign staff now never fail to get in the words "associating with an UNREPENTANT TERRORIST" during their interviews.

The day following Michelle Obama's moving speech at the DNC, in which she talked of their family, their relationship and dreams, (you know those "family values Hannity and his audience say they are promoting") Hannity on his radio program told his audience that: "don't you believe it lasies and gentlemen! Don't believe ANYTHING Michelle Obama had to say! Everything she said was nothing more than a script,,, pure HOLLYWOOD! NEVER forget that this is and ANGRY BLACK WOMAN who is for the first time proud of her country"!!!!

Anyone wishing to see the people who Hannity "associates" himself with need look no further than his website forums and the "Washington Politics" topic. Please urge everyone you know to visit this forum and see for themselves the type of people and ideas McCain/Palin now apparently are actively courting!

Hopefully McCain will come to realize that his association with Hannity heeding his advice has probably assured his defeat!

I think concerned viewers should boycott Sean Hannity on T.V. and on the radio. Maybe his sponsors will take notice.

Those "chickens ARE coming home to roost" for the McCain campaign, and their arrival has come at an ever increasing speed! Since Palin's interview with Sean Hannity, and the McCain/Palin interview with him after the last debate, their campaign AND them seem more and more to have adopted Hannity's talking points! How many times have we now heard Hannity's 'UNREPENTANT TERRORIST" label as attached to Obama's association to Ayers being uttered by Palin, McCain, and literally every other talking head campaign official of theirs in interviews???

When you choose to "dance with the devil", there is a BIG PRICE! Since adopting Hannity's style and apparently his suggestions, McCain has gone into an almost unrecoverable nosedive. Hopefully one of the biggest reasons for this is that good people in our country are sick of and repulsed by Hannity's continuous daily hate filled assaults!

The media seemed shocked by the audience utterances at recent Palin and McCain rallies, although Hannity believes they are Obama and Acorn plants!
All anyone need do is to visit the Hannity website and read the posts on his forums there, in the Washington Politics section, to see the people who "associate themselves" with Sean. It's NOT pretty and often terrifying, especially when even the most vile of posts seem never to be deleted by Hannity's moderators.

Please tell everyone you know to visit Hannity's forums for themselves to see the mindset of those that Palin and now McCain apparently feel comfortable in courting!

Great. A white woman telling me about racism, (I going to assume she's experienced it, since she's commenting on it). Campbell Brown should had on people that know what that is all about, instead of "theorizing".

That's an ig_no_rant statement. So a doctor can't treat a cancer patient unless they have had cancer? She can't speak from the perspective of having actually experienced it, but that's not what she did.
