During the course of the debate, CNN was running a viewer response line for uncommitted voters in Ohio. Overall the numbers reflected a very strong performance for Biden. And while Palin scored well, at times, among this crowd, the dial lines indicated that she remains a controversial figure among females in that state.

Biden repeatedly won high accolades on a wide range of topics. His remarks about the personal trials of having a wife and daughter die in a car accident sent responses from both male and females through the roof. His dig at Dick Cheney -- "the most dangerous Vice President in history" -- and his pledge to end the war in Iraq were similarly popular. When he defended Obama from Palin's attacks, he was held in equally high regard.

Much of the time, dial responses sunk when Palin began speaking. Respondents were generally unenthusiastic when she defended McCain. Her defense of the surge generated what was, at best, a flat response. She did have some high moments -- her final statement, her defense of Israel and her call to explore off shore drilling were all popular positions.

Following the debate, only one member of the focus group said they had decided to support the McCain-Palin ticket based on the debate; a half-dozen or more said they would now back Obama and Biden.

On the other hand, Frank Luntz just quizzed his focus group on FOX (which was, strangely enough, sponsored by Budweiser, owned by Anheuser-Busch, of which Cindy McCain's Hensley company is the third largest distributor). Nearly all of them thought Palin did an excellent job and, perhaps, won the debate. When she talked about responsibility -- both on Wall Street and in Washington - the dial numbers went extremely high. Many respondents, meanwhile, said she came off as a "regular American." However, only three respondents in the group said they had moved towards voting for the McCain-Palin ticket.

CBS Focus Group: Biden Wins Early numbers from a nationally representative poll of 473 uncommitted voters give Biden a significant edge: 46 percent say he won compared to 21 percent for Palin. Thirty-three percent said it was a tie.

More details:

Eighteen percent of previously uncommitted percent say they are now committed to the Obama-Biden ticket. Ten percent say they are now committed to McCain-Palin. Seventy-one percent are still uncommitted.

Both candidates improved their overall image tonight. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed say they now have a better impression of Biden. Five percent say they have a worse opinion of the Delaware senator, while 42 percent say they debate did not change their opinion.

Fifty-five percent say they now have a better opinion of Palin. Fourteen percent say they have a worse opinion, while 30 percent say their opinion hasn't changed.

After the debate, 66 percent see Palin as knowledgeable about important issues - up from 43 percent before the debate. But Biden still has the advantage on this - 98 percent saw him as knowledgeable after the debate. That figure was 79 percent before the debate.

Hillary Clinton on Palin and the debate:

As for Republican Gov. Sarah Palin, "I think she's very good. I always thought she would do well," Clinton said. "It's amazing. She's been thrust into the national spotlight with very little preparation."All things considered, you saw a very composed and effective debater last night," Clinton said.

This, coming at the height of the political season! Sean Hannity played this clip on his radio show today, quipping, "I'll bet both Hillary and Bill vote for McCain."

I just wanted to share my opinion about the vice presidential debates. Joe Biden won because he was so sincere, intelligent, and respectful. He is someone Americans should be very proud to elect. As a European, I wish I could vote in the real election, not only online. Even I whose native language is not English, understood the meaningless, memorized sentences that Sarah Palin was giving in her speech last night. She didn't answer the questions, she was trying to go around and around what she had memorized, and it didn't bother her that she didn't answer the moderator's questions. I wonder how she can get even the vote of 20% in this online poll. How desperate McCain must have been to select her! I wish Obama and Joe Biden luck.

I love Joe Biden. He may be long winded and gaffee sometimes but he loves his family and his country and will put forth the best he has to help Obama turn this country in a new direction.
He is smart on foreign policy and doesn't shoot from the hip like most mavericks do!

My heart and well wishes goes out to Joe and the whole Biden family. To send your son off to war at this moment in time for the family is hard enough. Now we have the news that Jill's Mom has passed. I really feel for this family who is trying to deal with private issue and still handle public affairs. I know Joe and his family can take it on, but again , MY HEART IS WITH THEM AT THIS HARD TIME IN THEIR LIVES!!!!!!

After twice electing a self-proclaimed cowboy from Texas who has messed up on all fronts, now there is a moose hunter from Alaska running for vice-president, as someone watching the election from Asia, America, you really boggle the world's collective mind.

Since Palin is so proud to be a Washington outsider, let her stay that way.

That is beautiful. Well said. Afterall, for this country to be restored to that "beacon on a hill," Government just needs to "get out of the way." Don't be a hypocrite, Palin, get out of the way of progress.

This Frank Lutz has quite a little enterprise going on at Fox as a political analyst. His little petty interviews after a debate are really phony. He goes into these shallow rants and explanations as to why and how conclusions where made then he gets a biased spin from either handjob hannity or O'Reilly. Besides that, he looks like Quasi Motto, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

Here's why 53% could say that Palin could do a good job as President: Starting with the Nixon Administration, the American people have had the notion that "government is bad, politicians are evil, and politics is dumb" repeated like a mantra that, in most people, sticks in the backs of their heads. Elections are a bother, they don't matter, we'll either sink or swim in their minds. That's why you still have so many undecided voters and so many people who think that a babbling idiot like Palin could represent the US, a country with a massive nuclear stockpile and with a recent track record so bad that leaders are getting elected around the world on anti-US platforms. These people don't think it matters, that none of this matters. They don't pay attention, they watch sitcoms and turn the channel when the news comes on because "it's depressing". They go by what their friends and family tell them because paying attention is a hassle. They work, they have kids, they live in a tiny little bubble...and for some odd reason, they vote.

I'm just stunned 1 percent thought Palin came out ahead in the debate! I watched soccer moms talking about her on tv and they just kept saying how they feel she's like them and because she's a soccer mom, understands re the war, economy. They didn't think Obama understood because his children weren't old enough yet! WHEN will people get that just because you feel someone is like you, understands what you're going through (wouldn't that be the majority of the middle class?), it doesn't mean they know how to FIX IT!!! I wish people would do their homework, stop buying into all the promises made and just LOOK at each candidates record and listen to their detailed plan for the future. If they haven't supported the middle class in the past, if you don't hear them giving ANY details about how they're going to help the middle class in the future, don't vote for them!

I wouldn't be shocked if Americans put John McCain and Sarah Palin into the white house, afterall they put Bush in there. However, I think the stakes in this election are much higher than in the last 2. America's economy is in freefall and American leadership and competitiveness are under serious threats. If Americans want another 8 years of decline then the choice is clear: go for McCain and Palin. Obama and Biden offer an inspiring and pragmatic vision that I'm sure will take America to greater heights. McCain's choice of Palin was clearly a result of political calculus and also showed his decision making to be irresponsible and 'shooting of the hip'. I give credit to Palin as a governor but in all honesty she is way out her league here. Her performance in the debate was evasive (even by the standards of politicians) and shallow. It's clear that outside of the points she had memorised she was unable to offer any thinking of her own. America deserves better and it is my hope that the American people make the right choice

Wow. After all this, It's not really surprising why Bush was elected twice. McCain could win too.

how in the name of everything that is holy and mom do 46% of Americans think that Palin is QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES???? that one is beyond me. absolutely. beyond. me. of everything that has happened politically in the last few months, or even last year, with the race for the White House, this is perhaps the statistic that has made me the most upset. How?
