So the Republicans are saying they lost the vote because Nancy Pelosi gave a speech that offended twelve of their members.

Well Barney Frank has an offer for them:

Give me those twelve people's names, and I will go talk uncharacteristically nicely to them, and tell them what wonderful people they are, and maybe they'll think about the country.

Here's video of the Republicans whining about Pelosi, and of Frank telling them to grow up:

What was Pelosi thinking?? It took Beuhner an entire weekend to scrape up enough Republican "yea"
votes for this turkey . Pelosi stirdes to the mike BEFORE THE VOTE and starts chastizing the Republicans for this entire mess. Smooth move. The woman obviously went to the podium with a severe case of constipation of the brain and diarrhea of the mouth. Thank goodness Barney Frank had the ability to cover her ass and get the heat off her. Bush and Pelosi are both inept as leaders they both need to ousted from their "leadership positions. Obama needs to get a new speaker when he takes office.

If you want to get real news with unbiased commentary and facts - read politico.com. If you want to insult, name-call and gossip and "enjoy" the Palin swimsuit competition and Gossip Girl updates, you are in the right place.

The change and tenor of this site of late is appalling - so bad that if I stay much longer, I'm going to vote RED just to distance myself.... and that makes no sense...

Facts - not Frank! Someone said - all politics is local and the Republicans voted to save their jobs.... calls came into their offices 10-1 against bailout and they did what their constituents wanted. Only 2 had the balls and selflessness to change their vots as the dow took a nosedive. However, unless you, yourself, have been in this position - you really can't condemn the nay-voters with any credence. I was swayed in favor of the plan becuase men with actual experience that amounts to success with free-market ideologies were in favor and that meant they supported the plans depsite the fact that their own companies would (and maybe still will) flourish as their competition flounders.... listen to Buffet and Bloomberg - not these has-been, conflicted and ignorant politicans.

Wall Street REALLY wanted this bill. Who did Wall Street believe were its best friends in Washington? Rethuglican lawmakers.

Yet who killed this bill? Rethuglican lawmakers.

I never thought I would see the day when Rethuglicans Congressmen turned their backs on the haves and have mores the way they did yesterday.

Although I fervently hoped that Congress would act quickly, I am thrilled that the Dems get to craft a bill from scratch rather than to put lipstick on the pig that Paulson proposed.

The fact of the matter is that Pelosi is either a buffoon or purely malevolent. Any lawyer knows that you don't ask the witness a question unless you already know the answer! Or did she even want the bailout to pass?

This post is an extraordinary example of a logical and factual non sequitur.

Have you ever watched CSPAN. Like Barney Franks said, it would be very uncharecteristic of anyone on either side of the aisle to get up and start complimenting and giving kudos to the other side for any reason. That's what they do is state their side of an argument.

Who would care what Pelosi said if they were prepared to vote for what is crucial to this country's economic future.

Barney. Can you first explain these comments from a few years ago lambasting the gov't oversight agency of Fannie and Freddie and jejecting any possibility of a financial meltdown:

Thank you.

Barney Frank and Dodd should be voted out of office. Both of them are partially responsible for this meltdown.

Barney Frank consistently has the best comebacks and retorts to Republican nonsense. And yes, Barney, Republicans would gladly make the entire country suffer an economic meltdown because somebody hurt their feelings.

The House of Representatives is a disgrace. All they care about is getting re-elected!
They're out for their own political asses and the hell with our jobs, our savings, our houses, our 401ks.
I will not vote for one incumbant this next election as a matter of principle. It's time to start this whole thing over!! They ALL have to go!!!!

Let's see 2/3rds of repubs voted down the bill and 2/3rds of Dems voted for it, so who is blocking progress on this bill?

FirstShirt asks why Pelosi didn't deliver all the Dems.

Well, she delivered a considerably larger percentage than the so-called republican leadership could manage. Why not all? Well, there are populist members in both parties. But in a larger way, she brought in all she really wanted to . To do more would make this look like a democratic plan. As she rightly said, this is a republican mess, let them participate in the fix.

Bottom line : the repubs couldn't bring home the bacon. They owned this- let them bask in it's glory.

Maybe the GOP actually could think for themselves in this case and no blindly support a giant corporate handout.. I find it hard to believe you can blame the GOP for this one...

No actually they can't think for themselves, because they were responding to feedback from an electorate that was compliaing about the general displeasure with Wall Street, not actually asking them for inaction and financial ruin.

Out of cowardice and a disconnect from public sentiments they made that terrible move that cost the markets 1.2 trillion of worth, even more then the entire bailout would havr cost.

The public just wanted them to be sure there were the protections, oversight, and best implementation as possible. No blank check is different from saying no check at all.

Isn't anyone the least bit happy that the people that voted no are finally listening to the people that put them in office?

The support for this bill is about 10% . . .

Yes, Yes and more Yes. When Gingrich (from Marietta, GA) stated on a news show that he would not vote the bailout in due to the outcry of his constituents who were against the bailout, I felt proud.

You are as slow-minded as those repubs that cowered at the last minute. The public just wanted them to be sure there were the protections, oversight, no golden parachutes for exceutive and the inclusion of Main Street in best implementation as possible. No blank check is different from saying no check at all.

"Five years ago, Barney Frank vouched for the "soundness" of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and said "I do not see" any "possibility of serious financial losses to the treasury."

Moreover, he said that the federal government has "probably done too little rather than too much to push them to meet the goals of affordable housing."

Earlier this year, Senator Christopher Dodd praised Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for "riding to the rescue" when other financial institutions were cutting back on mortgage loans. He too said that they "need to do more" to help subprime borrowers get better loans.

In other words, Congressman Frank and Senator Dodd wanted the government to push financial institutions to lend to people they would not lend to otherwise, because of the risk of default.

The idea that politicians can assess risks better than people who have spent their whole careers assessing risks should have been so obviously absurd that no one would take it seriously. "

The failure of the House Repubs to support this bill can be summed up in two words: NEWT GINGRICH

Dems could have passed this themselves. If it was the right thing to do why did 94 DEMS vote against. It's a bad bill. I'm glad it went down.

This is not to be a partisan bill. First off the house has 400+ representatives and they are not all going to agree across party lines on anything.

The fact is though that 2/3rds of the Dems voted for the bill , and 2/3rds of the Repubs voted against it.

All the needed was the guts of 12 more Repubs to get this bill passed. No Guts whatsoever.

After the vote, Bush was clearly upset and did not hide his confusion! During an interview with the President, him sometimes could not keep

themselves in the hands and in his speech felt panic. See here: http://tubedirect.net/index.php?q=Bush-interview-vote-about
All this even is not funny!
