No monkeying around for Alabama Republican

Businesswoman Cheryl Baswell Guthrie, a Republican vying to succeed Rep. Bud Cramer (D-Ala.), wants to let voters know she’s not “monkeying” around when it comes to ethics reform.

She’s been airing a series of advertisements lately featuring dancing chimpanzees that have got to qualify for the “so bad it’s good” category of political ads.

One features Guthrie in a job interview with three crooked businessmen (one who looks like and laughs like Santa Claus) talking about her plan for ethics reform, which is promptly rejected by the trio. Why Baswell Guthrie would want to portray herself actively seeking the endorsement of this group is anyone’s guess.

After she’s done speaking, the door opens to reveal another Congressional candidate: a monkey in a suit. This makes the Santa character, wearing rainbow suspenders, quite jolly indeed.

Careful viewers will note that the monkey is accompanied by two human handlers peering through the door, one of whom appears to be a midget wearing a magenta-sequined tuxedo jacket and a red fedora. They also may notice a Maryland flag in the background — a strange item to be included in an Alabama political ad.

Guthrie is the underdog in the GOP runoff next Tuesday against insurance broker Wayne Parker. Parker ran against her in last month’s primary and led her 49 to 18 percent — but fell just short of the 50 percent to win the nomination outright.

Republicans feel they have a chance to pick up a seat here, given the district’s Republican tilt at the national level. The winner will face Democratic state Sen. Parker Griffith.

That was a really crummy commercial. Probably put together by an intern on their summer vacation.

the point of the ad is that these "insiders" are more excited to see a monkey running for Congress than someone w/ ideas. It's called humor, and it's not terribly complicated. I liked it.

I would like to be humored as well, but it's illegal.

Wow, that was awful. It was worse than McCain's ads. An effective commercial needs a simple point and coherent theme. If there was some deeper meaning, it was a little esoteric. Baswell Guthrie would be more effective just focusing on a message of change without the chimps and Santa Claus.

Great ad but if posting monkey is good for the candidate, a dog could be weeping with a hog in the process. The ad needs to be completed so the the national republican party can ride the hog and the dog on the national scene. Be real this is a changed world. If conserving hate is conservatism then let the ball roll.

Actually, these types of ads have the oppossite effect so....more power to them. Nothing like the Republicans coming right out and saying what they feel.

Will the monkey replace the elephant. Or does the monkey represent Phil "mental perception" Graham, who is swing on a tree?. He has no knowledge of reality, nor does the GOP.

For the record, this woman is INSANE and pretty much a moron. I've seen her at a couple of campaign appearances. She's really unintelligible and seems to have no idea what she's talking about. I kind of feel bad for her. This is a clever commercial, though.

These are so BAD! I can't believe some one could be paid to produce such crap. I hope whoever did these ads made a lot of money because they will never work again when people find out they did them. What media firm would do this?

A Racist ad from the GREEDY OIL PARTY candidate in ALABAMA!! That's hard to believe. The republicans are so well known for their sense of fair play!

Can you all NOT see the Racism in these ads? Who do you think the monkey is supposed to represent? Hmmmm ponder that for a minute. And who do you think the clowns are supposed to represent but the hopeful? I am a writer and I see through this racial "symbolism" clear as day. This ad is a weak attempt at humor and a not-so-subtle attempt at racism. Come on people let's be smarter than this! The GOP's (Greedy Oil Party, thanks to jcoppo) desire is to divide and conquer us so they can push their wicked agenda, trying to make us believe that we ourselves are each other's enemies. Well, on 9/11 we saw who are real enemy was!! Because we do not stand together, we are being torn apart. Stop the Racism, Obama '08.
