John Edwards to debate Karl Rove in Buffalo.»

The Buffalo News reports that former Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards will debate Karl Rove on Sept. 26 on the campus of the University of Buffalo as part of the school’s Distinguished Speakers Series. In the midst of the U.S. attorney scandal, Edwards called on President Bush to “fire Karl Rove.” When Rove announced he was resigning from the White House, Edwards released a statement that simply read “Goodbye, good riddance.”

Forget televised, is it open to the public?

That will be worth the price of admission, as they say.

I agree. Karl Rove is ridiculous.

He was an advisor to Bush, you know. Perhaps his insights would be helpful…

I sent an email to the University asking that very question. I’ll post again as soon as I have a reply.

wow… a seasoned, charismatic trial lawyer verses a mildly clever, utterky morally bankrupt machiavellan geek….frankly, i have a hard time beleiving rove accepted this…

  15. jb Says:

If Rove were alive during the American Revolution, he would have been a red coat. This man places no stock in Truth, Freedom or Honesty. His only moral compass is power.

  16. barfly Says:

As long as you’re using both hands. ;)

A little too early for drinkin.’ That’s what you meant, right? :o
    ————————————————–

The news of McCain’s sudden success at foreign policy, is strange, considering Rove and his “shop” are now intensely involved in his campaign. Rove might easily have tapped an administration insider, someone like Elliot Abrams, to contact his counterparts in South America, and make a back-channel deal, ala the Iran/Contra years.

  17. hanshiro Says:

Put Rove against a real journalist like Bill Moyers or Seymour Hersh. Edwards is a publicity-craving poseur.

  20. jb Says:

As much as I’d like to see Edwards make this fat pig cry weee weee, I hope more that Rove will be charged and incarcerated by then for his crimes of Treason.

  21. barfly Says:

If we’re talking a Rovian style of debate, prepare for the dude to start, by first smearing Edwards’ wife…

  22. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

Maybe McRove will be in an orange suit by September.

He has been called to testify before the HR Judiciary Committee. If he doesn’t show, and he is sent to jail, what will FOX News do without his brilliant commentary?

  23. Tawdry Says:

Karl Rove disagreeable, discordant, discourteous, discrepant, discriminatory, disdainful, disgusting, dishonest, dishonorable, dismissive, disparaging, disreputable and disturbing. Distinguished he is not.

  24. Guido the Loving OBGYN Says:

We shouldn’t be debating Rove. He should be on trial for treason. It makes my blood boil that the Democrats entertain these Neocons and treat them like real humans.

  25. rogerD Says:

Seems hardly fair to the righties. After all, it’s going to be one against one. They’re used to a two-to-one advantage, at least, in these “debates”.

  29. And Yet... Says:

Holy shit on a stick. Happy Fourth of July.

Welcome to that debate, Herr Rove, John Edwards will shred you & your “arguments.”

    And, thankyajesus, for this debate.

  32. sectionop92 Says:

Instead of a debate, Edwards should just grab the nearest metal folding chair and crack Rove over the head with it. Then Edwards would assure himself of numerous medals of all kinds being bestowed upon him and vast applause and donations that would last him for the next 20 years.

Glad to see you admit that that COXUCKER punk TRAITOR Bush and his cronies are WAR CRIMINALS and MURDERERS,,

Happy 4th, and may Bush be in hell before the Devil…

  39. Arn Gunnutes Says:

This is “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the director’s recut”, where we get to see Aragorn (Edwards) rip Wormtongue (Rove) a new one and feed him a can of oil, in an alternate ending.

  47. jonny Says:

Rove — ROVE — threatens to step up, stand up, & man up.

Forgive my cynicism, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

  48. coskibum Says:

I say Las Vegas is betting 50:01 odds that bushy evokes executive privilege before Rovie spews his lies… O bye the way is this off the record and not subject to being under oath… Is it just me or, where do The Bushies get a pass from being under oath??? John Conyers we are watching!!!

  49. thomthum Says:

Rove will be escorted to the ring by his Manager “The Lovely Ms. Condoleeza” and have his tag team partner Alberto “Gonzo” Gonzales waiting for Edwards at ringside. As soon as Edwards is about to put him out with his signature move “The Eternal Plame” Gonzo will smack Edwards on the noggin with a metal chair when the “guest referee” John Roberts isn’t looking, and Rove will fall on him for the unjust win…unfortunately, I’ve seen this all before….Cuz Thomthum said so!

  50. beltman713 Says:

It would sort of be like putting Rove on trial in public. With Edwards’ legal background he should make minced meat out of him.

In 2001 I learned to type with both hands. My sex life has suffered since :)~

  52. moondancer Says:

Edwards will carve that lying pig into dogfood. Rove only knows lies and crime, debating a premier lawyer will be a humiliating and deserved defeat.

  53. Above the Clouds Says:

Rove will never show. He prefers to operate in the shadows and fringes of civilized society. Maybe Edwards will manage to ask Rove what ever happened to his “permanent Republican majority.”

  54. karela Says:

I want Edwards in there somewhere. VP if it was up to me. And we gotta have Biden for something. But, I dream of Colin Powell in the cabinet!

  55. karela Says:

Forgot to say, Screw Karl Rove. Go get him John. Show him up in front of America and the world for the dumb little twisted weasel he is.

  56. Cal Malenky Says:

Edwards made his fortune chewing up guys like Rove in court. Karl still thinks he has THE MATH.
Too bad it won’t be televised. Maybe we’ll see it on YouTube.

  57. clarkorwell Says:

Yippee!! clean the weasel’s clock John. Can we throw peanuts at the villain—or rocks?

  60. LaurenSimon Says:

I am outraged that the University of Buffalo considers Karl Rove a “Distinguished Speaker”, but as someone needs to take Rove down more than several pegs, John Edwards seems just the one to do it. I hope Edwards doesn’t pull any punches!

  61. SteveSOD Says:

So, apparently, aside from being a traitor, a liar, a fraud, a waste of skin, and an evil prick, Karl Rove is laughably stupid as well. Edwards will skewer that little piggy like a kabob.

sorry chocolate jesus but neither you nor any of the 61 commenters i’ve read posted so far can remember as far back as 2004 when the great trial lawyer, edwards, this charismatic fighter for right, this persuader of juries, this bane of corporations, debated another “utterly morally bankrupt machiavellian” named cheney, when both were running for vice president. and do you know what. edwards didn’t show me shit! nor did he impress anyone else. edwards sure didn’t win the debate. at best, he got a draw. i hope he does better this time. but i wouldn’t bet the rent on it. and neither should any of you, if past performance is any indication of future effectiveness.

  63. Ilona Proud Canadian Says:

    WAY TO GO JOHN!

I HOPE YOU KNOCK HIM OFF OF HIS SELF MADE PEDESTAL!

JUST CHEW HIM UP AND SPIT HIM OUT!

  64. JohnSimpson Says:

Rove was a driven, successful debater as a tad. As a highly positioned right wing republican strategist, he has shown he is without shame. Disagreeable facts are meant to be shaded, twisted or ignored in his world. Watch out Edwards. I think this guy would even demolish Cheney in a one on one.

  65. tspad32 Says:

    Godzilla Meets Bambi — yikes!

  66. Cecil Graham Says:

Edwards and Rove debating? I hope Rove gets punked again. Alan Coombs already softened him up for this debate and I bet Turdblossom didnt see it coming.

  67. rasputin1952 Says:

Oh, and bring a box for Rove, he’s gonna need it.

  68. billreef Says:

  70. missionimpossible Says:

This event should be TELEVISED. Period.

  71. Nofoolhere Says:

Those who dismiss Karl Rove as a “buffoon” or other negative epithet should remember that those were the kinds of labels applied Hitler in the early 1930s.

Never underestimate the winning capacities of a fascist.

  72. TheFacilitatrix Says:

I don’t believe that Rove will follow through. Something will “come up” so that he won’t be able to make it. (Or maybe he’ll invoke executive privilege.)

I don’t think Rove is any kind of a buffoon. I think he’s an extremely dangerous man. But as good as he is within his own arena, there’s no way that his smarmy demeanor can stand up to how Edwards presents himself. And he’s smart enough to know it.

I can see him committing to this by wanting to keep his name out there. But there’s no way I see him getting up on stage with Edwards.

  73. sectionop92 Says:

    thomthum Says:

Then as Rove and Co. think they get the dirty win, the Player’s Club of Barack and Michelle Obama hit the ring and uses a standing American flag pole as a weapon against Gonzales and Roberts, while Michelle has Condie on the ground and reads her “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” as she sits on top of her and fist pounds her with her left fist to Condie’s face. Then Rove is in the corner and Da Prez’s music hits…as he’s about to come down with Tha Service to level the Pardon on Obama to save Rove. Then the Ex-Patriots come out of nowhere, consisting of Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Al Gore…and the shocker…George Bush Sr. We get the preview of father v. son before we get to see the fight we all want to see in Sr. v. Jr. in the Supreme Court chambers, the Sunday before Super Tuesday on Pay-Per-View in a leather belt & large buckle match. As the focus goes back to Rove, Obama signals to the roof and Valerie Plame descends from the rafters above and does the De-Classification on Rove in the man region several times as he screams for mercy. Then Obama unrolls the flag with all the blood from the action and says it’ll be auctioned off online in a new bi-partisan effort for testicular fracturing injuries for the uninsured.

  74. johnnyvento Says:

John Edwards didn’t do so well against Dick Cheney. The reason was because he was not equipped to respond to blatant lies. Nobody lies more blatantly than Karl Rove. Unless he is prepared with specific arguments, convincing and many, to illustrate these lies and completely humiliate Rove then this will be a waste of time.

  75. kasinca Says:

    #63 samg Says:

    ———————————————————–

Factor in the fact that KKKarl Rove is a college dropout who has made his living lying and committing dirty tricks for the lame brain wingers for his entire career and I would give John Edwards his chances. The debate you give credit to Dick Cheney was conducted by the MSM which has proven to not really be liberal after all. I would place my money on John. If KKKarl is so smart and honorable, he should go under oath and set the record straight instead of hiding behind Dubya’s false power of executive privilege. KKKarl is scum like the winger party.

  76. vera truth Says:

I hope Mr. Edwards has a chance to TEACH Karl Rove about honesty, patriotism, kindness, and respect for other human beings. Rove has given a lot of unsolicited advice that has proven to be destructive. Actually, I think he has worn out his welcome with the Republicans, since he is destined to lose some of his POWER. One day his so-called “Executive Privileges” will END.

  77. vera truth Says:

This man, Karl Rove, has LOST all respect from most honest people in the United States. John Edwards is the WINNER before this so-called debate begins. What are they debating anyway … something Rove has been dreaming about since he lost most of his POWER?

  78. vera truth Says:

I wonder if it will be televised on FOX. That should help their ratings, although that means I will HAVE to WATCH.

  79. change08 Says:

John, give him a left, then a right, then a kick in the pants. Bash him over the head with a chair. Kick him in the groin and them when he bends forward, give him the final punch in his fat stupid mug. Make him pay for all the lies, smears, wickedness, and evil he put John Kerry and Al Gore through.

  80. cybercitizen Says:

Is Karl Rove a rat that leaves a sinking ship? No, he is the rat that sunk the ship and then leaves.

  81. panipuri Says:

UB students can get free tickets at a certain point in the school year before the event. http://www.specialevents.buffalo.edu/distinguishedspeakers.php has generally public ticket information.

Although Rove is ridiculous it should be amusing. A few years ago Ann Coulter and Janet Reno debated and it was always fun to hear the 25 students from the College Republicans cheer at her lack of substance only to be then jeered at by the other 4,000 people in attendance.

  82. Dimslie Says:

The linthead wants to debate Rove? Are you kidding? Cheney made an absolute fool of the guy in the 2004 Vice Presidential debate. At one point, Brit Hume had to stop the debate to explain to Edwards what the Defense of Marriage Act said. Edwards thought it was pro gay marriage! Rove will eat him alive. Who is the idiot going to “debate” next, George Will?

  83. Dimslie Says:

I’ve just been reading some of the other posts. You people must all be part of the Edwards family (the legitimate part, no doubt). I’d stand a better chance of beating Tiger Woods in a round of golf than Edwards will stand debating Rove. Usually, someone as dumb as Edwards will make such outlandish claims that an intelligent person doesn’t know how to refute them because he’s never heard anything like them before. However, Rove doesn’t just have about a 50 point higher IQ than Edwards, he has an incredible command of the facts. Bush didn’t win 2 terms just because Gore and Kerry are stupid. Edwards will look like as much of a fool as he would have if he had debated William F. Buckley. He’ll look worse than he did last week hiding out in the men’s room to avoid the National Enquirer reporters.

  84. Dimslie Says:

    Dear “Kasinca”:

No, the Vice Presidential debate wasn’t hosted by “MSM”, whatever that’s supposed to be. Brit Hume works for FOX. As for your wanting to bet on Edwards, I think you’ll find all the takers you could ever want on that one.
