Stick a Pin in It

1:25 PM Sat, Jun 14, 2008 |  |
Christy Hoppe   E-mail   News tips

While a number of speakers -- such as Railroad Commission chairman Michael Williams and Mike Huckabee -- have praised the advance of Barack Obama and what it means towards a colorblind society, at least one vendor hasn't gotten the message.Obama Button0001.JPG

At the Republican state convention, a booth hosted by Republicanmarket was selling a pin Saturday that says: If Obama is President will we still call it the White House.

There were other pins that weren't necessarily conveying the positive, inclusive, united front that has been portrayed during the convention. One said, "Press 1 for English. Press 2 for Deportation" and another, "I will hold my nose when I vote for McCain"

If I were a republican I would be ashamed. As it is I am merely disgusted.

Whoever is selling these is pathetic. Even more pathetic are the people who manufacture and distribute them.

Posted by Fred Finkel @ 8:08 PM Mon, Jun 16, 2008

Sounds like Democrat operatives invaded the convention for purposes of disaffection.

That's as bad as "Hot Women Vote for Obama"!

Disgraceful.

Time to change to something more "positive" than right wing propoganda...

The Republicans are showing their true colors.

This is disgusting. The fact that the GOP convention tolerated this says it all. It's pathetic that these idiots can even claim the "patriotic" label.

In a dozen words, this button perfectly summarizes the Republican Party.

Talk about chickens coming home to roost (if the racism that runs rampant in the Republican party ever actually left).

All they have to peddle is hate and war - both of which they seem to just adore.

Posted by Johnson @ 12:23 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

sexism is all over the news, but the MSM lets all of this go while Pushing McCain's talking points. I would love to still feel love for idiots.

It would seem that this pin is yet one more indication that the Republican Party is filled with disgraceful racists.

Why am I not surprised?

Posted by Caca @ 12:56 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

GOPsers always were racist. In fact, they hate everything and everyone. No surprise here...

Racism? In MY Texas GOP?

Well, after all, it would be "liberal" to just report this as a hard, cold fact wouldn't it?/snark

I am ashamed and horrified that no one, not the printer, not the organizers, could stop and say, "Wait a minute. We don't need a law about this. Get the hell out of here, and take that rubbish with you!"

Posted by vel @ 2:16 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

I'm so glad I left Texas. This style of attack should surprise no one. Here's to the Bush-i-fication of the Lone Star State and some of this country.

Posted by Joseph Riedel @ 2:17 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

The fact that this is not being blasted on the airwaves is a testament to the lack of shock that something like this would occur at the Texas GOP convention

Posted by Sooze @ 2:19 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

This is what the Republican party is. It always has been THIS - but was very successful in disguising it's true objectives in order to be palatable to the main stream. Their act is no longer working and they have no idea how to 'fake the funk' anymore.

Posted by Democrat2000 @ 2:20 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

Are you kidding me? Has any one called them at 407-333-2983 and asked for a statement or emailed them at sales@republicanmarket.com? Accountability please before you release anything like this. No picture of this being sold at the convention? Espicially at a state that both campaigns think they are going to win?

Posted by Dizzle @ 2:25 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

Yeah, I'm from Texas and I'm actually surprised by this... It is one thing to be a backwoods bigot. They're usually loud, but without tangible mediums of expression. But, it is an entirely different thing to make buttons and market them at the state convention. These people need to be run out of the state.

Posted by hotspur @ 2:25 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

It's just so lame it makes my head hurt.

Posted by Bob @ 2:27 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

The maker will probably claim that it's a statement against "librul political correctness" or something, implying that lefties find the label "White House" racist, and these guys are in favor of protecting our history, or something. But they have to be tone deaf idiots to think that that's how people will actually read it.

Posted by Dont Ask @ 2:28 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

Republican'ts just can't help it. It's like Tourette's Syndrome. They literally CAN'T stop themselves from revealing the racism and blind terror that guides their lives

Posted by Martin @ 2:30 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

If this WERE reported on the MSM, it would most likely be "inadvertently" connected to a Democratic State Convention. It seems whenever a Republican is embroiled in any number of Republican-patented scandals they are always "mislabeled" as Democrats.

This obviously racist button also makes me think of the FoxNews program that called Michelle Obama a "baby mama." Racist pure and simple, yet noone is really held accountable. Its the nappy-headed ho moment for FoxNews and noone seems to care.

Republicans = fear, hate, bigotry, greed, greed, and more greed. They don't care about the people they pander to yet they are constantly supported by said people. Why is that?

While it is certainly troublesome that a vendor would think, produce and sell this trash; what is worse is that they had a stand at the convention and sold the product. I would like to give some people the benefit of the doubt, but unless provided info otherwise, it appears that the Republican party is made of couple of overt racists and a whole lot of whispering racists, with no one objecting to this junk.

Repubs are such slow learners. Of course it will still be called the White House. It has been inhabited by the village idiot the past 7 years and no one has changed the name to the Looney Bin or the Failure Farm.

Posted by dave @ 2:46 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

I love it. Get it all out there for everyone to see. BUT, it's our job to refrain from the name-calling(racists pig, bigot, etc.). I fear if we start throwing around the "racist" word then it will put people on the defensive...people who may not want to vote for Obama becasue of his policies, not becasue of his race. Also, voters on the fence don't want to fear being branded a racist if they decide they might want to vote for McCain. If we start tossing that word around there will be a group of Obama supporters who will use it endlessly till November. I don't want any part of that kind of behavior. We are better than playing the victim and branding people racists. Let those people be who they are...the time is coming when their lot in this country will by minute and insignificant. Crap, for all we know maybe that time is now. Don't give them justification for fighting with us by giving them the opportunity to be a victim.

Posted by Ronathan @ 2:48 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

@Fred Finkel

Try going to www.republicanmarket.com and look at the products they are selling. These guys are clearly not Democratic operatives.

The button collection is particularly telling. Some gems include:
"Life's a bitch. Don't vote for one." with a picture of Hillary.

"I still hate Commies even after they changed their name to Liberals".

"KFC Liberal Special: 2 Fat Thighs, 2 Small Breasts, . . . Left Wing".

"Republican women like MEN".

and the completely unoriginal
"Somewhere in Arkansas, a village is missing its idiot".

Of course. It's all the Democrats' fault. Can't hold Republicans accountable for anything, can we? Even when it takes place at their very own convention.

I am a registered Republican (but really just a fiscal conservative), and I am absolutely disgusted by this. I'd also like to add that not all Republicans believe the Bush doctrine for government, we're not all retarded. We intelligent conservatives are trying to do something about it.

Dear Biggot who created these buttons,

You are an idiot. You have no right to live, breathe and work in a free society if you propogate filth and ignorance like you have. What a waste of a perfectly good button. I suggest you take the pin part and jab it into your own eye as you truly are a moron. Maybe you should take a moment to research your own past as I have no doubt you will see many variations of "White".

Posted by keith @ 3:38 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

Well, it was the Democrats who forced all those Republicans to take money from Jack Abramoff. And it was the Democrats who lured Florida Representative Bob Allen into a public bathroom and offer a black undercover police officer $20 to give him (the police officer) oral sex. And it was the Democrats who trapped Larry Craig on his countless gay trysts and ultimate arrest for lewd behavior. And it was the Democrats who forced Alaskan Congressman Ted Stevens to take kickbacks from convicted VECO fellon Bill Allen. And it was the Democrats who made Duke Cunningham take millions in bribes while in office. And it was the Democrats who made thousands, or millions, of emails go missing in the White House. And it was the Democrats who forced disgraced Staten Island Representative Vito Fossella to get arrested for drunk driving and uncover his extra-marital affair, complete with love child. And now they're planting racist buttons at a Republican State Convention.

Posted by Steven @ 3:43 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

This is so typical of the Republican party - when you can't win because you're the right choice, you resort to low-brow tactics. Sickening!

Posted by ronathan @ 3:47 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

@PotMeetKettle

umm. . . Byrd has publicly stated that joining the KKK was the worst mistake he ever made. Yes, he had racist attitudes at one point in history, but since then he has been awarded a 100% approval rating from the NAACP during the 108th Congress, and he endorsed Obama over Clinton. If that makes him a racist, then he's not a very good racist.

And the difference between Strom Thurman running on a segregationist platform and this story about the pin is that Thurman's run on the segregationist platform happened in the 1950's and 60's, whereas this story about the buttons is happening NOW, in 2008. The Democratic Party has changed a lot since then. Yes, at one point, the Democratic Party was associated with segregation- JFK and LBJ changed all that with the Civil Rights Act, which led to the Republicans abandoning the values that made it the "Party of Lincoln" and turned it instead to the Nixonian-"Southern Strategy"-racist organization it is today.

This was a booth space purchased by some group calling themselves Republicans. That doesn't mean that they are, nor does it mean they aren't allowed to sell their items in a free society. I don't agree with it, but it's just as likely that this is a group of George Soros' folks pushing this junk in an attempt to paint us, the true Republicans, with a racist brush. Don't forget that Mr. Lincoln was a Republican!

So before you, my brothers on the left, start calling names, please reconsider that we are all ultimately on the same team.

That's the thing: republicans aren't funny. In general, they're nasty and mean and they think that's funny.

I remember at the '96 GOP convention in San Diego, one could buy a button that read, "Hinckley Shot The Wrong Brady."

Get it? Sarah Brady was in favor of gun control. And the button suggests that John Hinckley shoulda shot her dead. Shoot her! Kill her with a gun because she's in favor of gun control! Ho ho ho!

Now that button was available for purchase, not outside the convention; no, it was for sale in the
official merchandising area at the convention.

I speak to many whites about race and they all generally say they were not raised "that way". What this Obama nomination thing has done is to separate the whites that are really and truly not racist from the ones that talk that old, outdated game of how they weren't raised that way. Funny thing is that all of us African Americans know who the fakes are. I would bet you any amount of money that if you aske the person that produced the button if the harbor any racist sentiment, they will say, "I just wasn't raised that way". They will probably try to spin the words on the button as to try to make them non offensive. I, for one brother, am not buying it.

And I reflect back on a comment made to me in class by one of my scholars this last spring semester ... He was lamenting the difficulty in finding a job despite doing all the right things .. and some others chimed in too. He was a black man and I felt the pain when one of my more vocal black female students said, “I just wish more white people could be like you Professor Woz.” I was silent for a moment and said, “That is my wish too.” You see, if I had a job for my scholar, I’d have put him ahead of anyone else in line because he demonstrated that he was bright, hard-working, polite, and professional. Then today I read that button and so sadly shed a tear—and I wonder how is job search is today.

I have to say that while I do not agree with the sentiments expressed on the paraphenalia, we must not forget that this is a free, capitalistic country. The beauty is that we all do not have to agree or buy anything we dislike or find offensive. Also the comments that people have made demeaning the Republican Party do not help the situation, in fact it makes them look just as ignorant. We must take the high road, teach our fellow citizens respect for opposing ideas, and have civil, open-minded debate if things are ever to change in this country.

The pin is quite deliberate and no amount of disdain will shame these people. They are simply white supremest punks and proud of it. They absolutely see nothing wrong with their racism. They wear it as a badge of honor.

Tommy, et al -

You're just now hearing about it because you apparently weren't lucky enough to be educated about the vast wonders and genius of the Dallas Morning News website before today.

The site which, if you'll look at the date stamp on Hoppe's post here, actually broke this little tidbit on Saturday. IN the MSM. You read it here first.

Or, if you read it somewhere else, it's because THEY read it here first.

So, come *on* with the conspiracy theories asking about photoshopping and whether it's true and whether it's been verified (though feel free to call them, i'm sure you won't be the first today) and how we know they were selling it there.

They were.

Now, see. That's what you can love about the MSM. We aren't some random little blog with an agenda that some random little dude or dudette put together in front of the TV in their pajamas. This is an actual media company whose writers get paid to give you facts.

You can trust that our Austin Bureau Chief, Christy Hoppe, has zero motivation to lie.

I mean, why would she? She covers politics. You can't MAKE this stuff up.

Racism is alive and well in the Good Ole (Boy) USA! YEEEHAH!!

(For the mouth-breathing rednecks--that's called sarcasm)

While certainly objectionable, it ultimately is his right to say what he wants to say. You dems try to say that you support all free speech, but when it comes down to it, you only support the speech that you agree with.

The vitriolic words that are written here calling all republican thugs and racist are as equally as offensive as the asinine button.

We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is afraid of its people. - John Fitzgerald Kennedy

I would love to see the buttons on the table at the Democratic convention. I am sure there was nothing offensive or hateful especially directed at President Bush. I never voted for him but give me a break. This whole country need to get a life and get an enema.

Posted by capt caveman @ 5:08 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

John, the First Amendment does not protect hate speech. But I doubt you've ever actually read it.

Posted by Amanda @ 5:11 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

If all Republicans are racist, does that mean that all Democrats cheat on their wives? I think that we need to stop trying to group everybody together and realise that there are idiots in every station in life.

Posted by Jen @ 5:14 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

Hahaha I think it's funny, and I think it is even funnier that so many people are getting pissed about it.

Posted by JB @ 5:14 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

This is pathetic.

As an Independent Conservative, I want to ask the Democrat posters one question ..

If you are SO offended by this button, are you also offended by the YEARS of hate speech from your own party .. not to mention the ravings of Air America advocated the assassination of Pres Bush??

I get it. You absolutely LOATHE George Bush as a human being ... but where was this shock & offense when the likes of Randi Rhoades advocated killing the President of the United States on Air America?

All I can see are a lot of pots calling kettles black. Try checking your own standing before trying to claim the high ground.

I live in Texas. This is about right. Look at the rubes spouting off the "god bless Texas" crap as an a-men. Texas is exactly what the outside world thinks it is as is the American South. We can all wish until we can't wish any more that it weren't the case - it won't change a thing. The rep is well earned around these parts - doubly so for the GOP in general.

Generalizations? Maybe. Rash? No. Is judging a group by 90% of its members wrong? I think not. Judging it by 70% is more than fair - especially if that other 30% chooses to remain silent and prefers to attack evil liberals rather than the raging bigots, religious radicals and Luddites dominating their party.

Oh, for you true-blue, red-state-loving, good-ole Texuns - Luddite means afraid of technology. I suppose I should have found a word for "afraid of knowledge of any sort" instead though.

Lazy me.

Nice to see the GOP and its flock working so hard to become irrelevant though. Keep it up.

I disagree with those who imply this wouldn't have happened outside of Texas. Racism is racism, and I've met more racists living outside of Texas than I have while living there.

That being said, it is a despicable sentiment.

Ah, good old republicans. They got the market cornered on patriotism, huh?

I think Gonzo ( Hunter S. Thompson ) said it best after the ‘00 ‘election’:

“We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world — a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us. No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we’ll kill you.

Also, what moron would actual post an argument based around "well...well, liberals are mean too" as some retort?

"Randi Rhoades advocated killing the President of the United States on Air America" Gee, not sure many knew about that. I did not. Would not support that blather either. You should poll all in here to make sure we do in fact agree with his statements rather than assume we do. As speech of that sort isn't blasted on AM radio and Fox News 24-7 this is an apple-to-oranges situation.

Karen, you need to stop digging now. You just made a fool of yourself by acting like a two-year old. Would that argument work "I know you are but what am I" if your kids tried it around the house? But you use it here?

Pathetic.

Posted by Jon Smith @ 5:32 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008

Captain,

The first amendment certainly protects the type of speech included on that button, just as it protects the KKK's and the Black Panthers' right to march and protest. If you would like to expand your faulty knowledge about the current jurisprudence on "hate speech" please review the case R.A.V, v. City of St. Paul (505 U.S. 377).

But good try.

However, you can go ahead and throw out the ad hominem attacks. That is what Dems do best since they clearly cannot win on the policy arguments.

At long last, America's TRUE COLORS will be seen by the world. And they're NOT red, white, and blue. Keep it up, hatemongers. YOU'RE the real terrorists that will destroy America.

Guess what obviously photoshopped button doesn't appear anywhere on republicanmarket.com for sale? Liberals gets 3 guesses and effort will be rewarded.

All: The pin is real, and it was for sale at the Republican convention. Reporter Wayne Slater purchased one and took the picture shown here. Feel free to debate the merits of the pin, whether it's racist, what it means, whatever, but don't deny that it exists. If Republicanmarket.com would answer our calls, we'd ask them why it's not on their Web site. Thanks for reading.

Paula,

What are you even talking about? Unless I am completely wrong, it was America that nominated Barack Husein Obama. Our true colors are such that a man whose father was a goat herder can grow up an be nominated for President of the United States. Our true colors are fighting against Nazism and genocide.

I can only assume that calling us the "real terrorists" is somehow an argument that the vile terror
