Vote Mike Gravel For Santa Claus

“Don’t you know television just exists to shield for the military industrial complex? …He got inside my head.”

Perhaps it was inevitable.

As Red State Update has grown in popularity as a farcical, oddball commentary on the 2008 presidential election, it was just a matter of time till former Sen. Mike Gravel entered the eccentric fray.

Gravel has been introduced to a younger set of voters this election cycle as a fiery maverick, scolding other candidates for their stance on the Iraq War in the earlier Democratic presidential debates. He has also cultivated an online image as a bit of an oddball with his unusual campaign videos.

Dressed now as Santa Claus, Gravel has expanded his repertoire of political theater.

Though a dash of oddity has peppered Gravel’s ‘08 presidential run, it is important to remember that he is a hero. As I noted in an earlier post entitled Gravel’s Presidential Acid Test, the former senator has built a reputation of slicing through the smoke and mirrors of Washington politics to expose the truthful heart of important issues:

In Young Men and Women the former Senator speaks of his experience, compares the Vietnam War to Iraq War, and defines his role in publicly exposing the Pentagon Papers, a secret government report on political, policy, and military involvement in the Vietnam War. Gravel makes coherent parallels between the stances taken by the two major political parties during that era and those same parties today.

While his presidential prospects appear dim, his heart is certainly the size of a presidential ego.
