Republican presidential frontrunner Rudolph Giuliani assured a child yesterday that he would protect planet Earth against a hostile alien invasion.

Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani yesterday said preparedness will be key for all crises, even an attack from outer space.

During a town hall meeting in Exeter, a young questioner asked the former New York mayor about his plan to protect Earth.

“If (there’s) something living on another planet and it’s bad and it comes over here, what would you do?” the boy asked.

Giuliani, grin on his face, said it was the first time he’s been asked about an intergalactic attack.

“Of all the things that can happen in this world, we’ll be prepared for that, yes we will. We’ll be prepared for anything that happens,” said Giuliani, who spent the day campaigning in the key early voting state.

Being prepared is a theme that runs through the campaign of Giuliani, the mayor during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York.

The boy’s question let Giuliani take a lighthearted turn as he wrapped up his answer on emergency preparedness.

“This could be the new Steven Spielberg,” he said. “You want to be a science fiction writer or a scientist?”

The boy replied he wants to be a sculptor.

Then Giuliani asked the audience for another question: “Shall we take one question about this planet?”

Sorry, I’m betting on the aliens this time.  A Giuliani presidency would indubitably make America less safe with his painful ignorance and bombast. At least we have a new Situation Room.

So how should we prepare for an alien attack? First we need to be aware of our vulnerabilities.

Former British official Nick Pope, who ran the Ministry of Defence UFO project from 1991 to 1994, said there have already been several “highly credible” alien sightings and landings in England.

“If you reported a UFO sighting now,” said Pope, “I am absolutely sure that you would just get back a standard letter telling you not to worry. “Frankly, we are wide open - if something does not behave like a conventional aircraft now, it will be ignored. “The X-Files have been closed down.”

Concerning the potential of an alien attack, Pope said “There has got to be the potential for that and one is left with the uneasy feeling that if it turned out to be so, there is very little we could do about it. If you believe these things are extra terrestrial craft then you cannot rule out that what is happening is some kind of covert reconnaissance.”

Actor Tom Cruise has taken a proactive approach, believing a fallout shelter is the best way to by reportedly building an alien bunker just in case.

Reuters on the other hand reports that Travis Taylor and Bob Boan, the authors of “An Introduction to Planetary Defense”, believe a Mujahideen-style resistance is our best hope.

“You’d have to create an insurgency, a mujahideen-type resistance,” Taylor said. “The insurgents know how to win this war against us. It also tells us that if we were attacked by aliens, this is our best defense.”

For our intergalactic protection, perhaps the U.S. should stop fighting the insurgency and join them.
