Fred Thompson Announces Nonchanantly on Leno

Fred Thompson caught in a rare smile

“I’m running for president of the United States”

On the Tonight Show with Jay Leno this evening former Republican Senator Fred Thompson casually announced his bid for the presidency. Too casually.

And that, ultimately, will be his downfall.

Thompson mentioned how he’ll do his “share of those sort of things” when referring to the presidential debates, and seemed almost too nonchalant in doing so. Thompson also rarely made eye contact with Leno or the audience, looking downward through most of the interview.

While the potential of Thompson could excite the demoralized Republican base, Thompson lacks the engagement required to inspire the American electorate in the general election.

Quotes:

“I decided it was time for me to step up”

“People treat politicians like the dentist: they don’t pay any attention to them till they have to.”

“I have been mistaken for Dr. Phil.”

Ho hum.

Receiving only one good clap for saying more Americans troops have died for other countries than all other countries combined, Thompson echoed Bush’s stance on the Iraq War and bored us to sleep.

Yawn. Yawn. Yawn.

Hello Thompson to the Republican Primary.

R.I.P. Thompson in the general election.
