Bill Maher: Edwards Looks Like a Winner

“The one sure winner would be John Edwards”

Appearing on the August 20th airing of The O’Reilly Factor, straight talker Bill Maher voiced who he believes can win the presidential race.

Responding to O’Reilly on who he supports for the next president of the United States, Maher said “the one sure winner would be John Edwards”.

2008 election talk 2/3rds of the way through the video

O’Reilly: Who do you support for the next president of the United States?

Maher: Well I don’t ever really say I support any one candidate because I like to have them on my show. I like to stay a little neutral because I’m sort of in the media game myself. But I’ve been asked this question before and I would answer it this way:

I would say for the Democrats, the one sure winner would be John Edwards. I think Hillary is a dicey proposition even though she looks better and better all the time and seems to be more popular all the time. Barack Obama obviously is the exciting candidate. He’s the one who will get the youth vote, of course the youth don’t vote, so, that’s not that good.

But John Edwards in a general election campaign, I think, that to me is a winner.

O’Reilly: Now, Republicans. Are anybody on the right, on the Republican side, appealing to you Bill Maher?

Maher: They’re appealing to me as a comedian.

O’Reilly: But you wouldn’t vote for them unless Hell froze over.

Maher: Right, but I would like to see the cross-dresser and the Mormon run together.

Is Edwards really the winner to look out for?

Possibly, though he shares the same inexperience weakness as Obama.

As one who spends considerable time with Independent voters, I am reminded of the 2004 Democratic primary and what my Independent associates said then. They voiced an appeal for Edwards to be the Democratic nominee, connecting with his populist message. The same voters in this election cycle have voiced approval of Barack Obama.

Candidates with a unifying theme strongly connect with Independent voters.

This is part of the reason why some Democrats are concerned that Sen. Hillary Clinton is ultimately unelectable. Clinton wields an us-v.s.-them rhetoric that exacerabates her polarizing characterization.

As stated in my previous post, the Democratic candidate that is likely to fair best in the general election is Sen. Joe Biden. With the Republicans sure to play their weathered terrorism card, Democrats need to appear tougher and be smarter on terrorism and foreign policy than other issues. By trumping the Republicans on Iraq and terrorism, and with Republican standings wallowing in their own failures, Democrats have a strong chance to win back the presidency in 2008.
