Daily Show: Ron Paul Calls the Republican Party Flip-Floppers

Ron Paul on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Appearing June 4, 2007 on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul said the Republican Party “flip-flop around” on issues. On Democracy:

  • I don’t believe in trying to spread it, I think it’s a good message, but I don’t believe in spreading it with guns. We should spread it by setting a good example and getting others to emulate us, but not to try to force it on other people.

On why he is getting good buzz:

  • A good message, the philosophy of liberty, and people are still interested in being free people, living in a free country.

On running as a Republican:

  • I don’t think they (Republicans) are very good conservatives either. They talk about balancing budgets and spending less but they don’t really. But you know the Republican Party has been known to have a position that they didn’t like going overseas. You know they didn’t especially agree with Clinton on going into Kosovo and in Somolia, so they flip-flop around.

On consistent principles:

  • (speaking somewhat sarcastically) I like to think that I’ve introduced a brand new idea into this campaign: I’ve even suggested that we follow the Constitution.

On expanding government:

  • I think that’s a temptation that most people yield to once they get into power.

On switching from a Libertarian to a Republican:

  • We’re overseas spreading the message of democracy, but you know here, if you’re in a third party you have a tough time.

On his domestic agenda:

  • I think a lot of our government is very wasteful.
  • I happen to think that the market can deliver any service better than the government can.

On corporations:

  • There’s a big difference between corporations that benefit from government largess, that’s corporatism and that’s evil.

————-

Stewart on Republican presidential candidate, former Gov. Mitt Romney:

  • I don’t go for him. He strikes me as the Republican John Kerry, in the sense of very, this sort of aristocratic bearing but playing the game of like: ‘Hey look at me I’m hunting I’m drinking coffee, huh’?

I don’t buy Ron Paul. I’d like to, but something is fishy indeed.

@slivermoon22: Umm, care to elaborate? Ron Paul’s record is about as transparent as you can get, I’ve been aware of him since the early nineties, he’s a pretty open book.

Any, was a decent appearance for Paul. I wish Stewart had asked more questions concerning economy but time is always too short. I am looking forward to the debate tomorrow.

    slivermoon22,

I’d also be interested to hear about your reservations regarding Ron Paul. Don’t let us so easily dismiss your statement as unfounded and uninformed. Speak up!

I still kick myself that (even after I met him) I didn’t have the guts to vote for him in 1998.

Ron Paul has been consistent since the late 1970’s. He is the only candidate in either party with integrity.
